Being a teacher is very important to me because I believe that children are essentially our future. I want to help children believe in themselves thus, helping them learn and grow. Children have open minds that are molded and influenced by parents teachers and the community around them. I want to be involved in that process. Children are fun, active and always curious so I think that everyday of teaching would be fun, inspirational and very rewarding. Teaching would give me a purpose and it will allow meaning into my own life. I think that a teacher should be an educator but more importantly be a counselor towards their students, allow creativity and curiosity in the classroom, give students confidence and lastly always be learning.
As a teacher I want to have a classroom where student teacher relationships are top priority. The relationships built in a classroom are very beneficial towards the students and it can help them grow as people. Students should feel comfortable telling their teacher anything and they need to be comfortable in the classroom so that they can speak their mind, voice their opinions and feel free to learn. Students come into the classroom with more baggage than just their backpacks, whatever is going on at home or in their community does effect them and being a teacher means being the type of person to care about a child and take the extra initiative to build that relationship.
Creativity and curiosity are such important characteristics in children. I want my classroom and my teachings to foster and enforce those characteristics. Creativity and curiosity leads to knowledge and the yearning for learning which is so important for students to maintain because without the want to learn they will never reach their full potentials. There is never a “dumb” question. I want questions to be apart of the culture in my classroom. I want children to not only question their peers and themselves but to question me and the lessons I teach as well.
Confidence in a child is also a huge factor in the process of learning. Without confidence in what a child is doing they will never want to share their ideas or grow upon what they know. Many students believe that they can’t do something. I want to change this mindset in any child that comes to me. There is no “can’t” there is only “do”, and “try”. No matter what the students’ backgrounds are they can succeed and they will succeed with hard work, determination and the confidence booster of me their teacher.
Lastly, I think that I as a teacher should never stop learning whether it is from formal education or from my students. The education world changes so much from time to time that there are developing ways that are more effective in teaching and I certainly want to be up to date with these things. I want the best for my students and by doing so I must keep learning and have an open mind about new ideas from other teachers, from my own students and from the vast education world. Modeling is so important when teaching children a new skill, and I myself must model how to learn and how to develop new skills by reading books, listening to others and going to classes. If my students see how involved I am in learning they will want to learn as well. Therefore making it a positive thing for both the students and myself.
Always being a learner, a counselor, an enforcer of curiosity, creativity and confidence is very important to myself and the way that I want to teach in a classroom someday. I will take these characteristics and place them into my classroom to establish an environment where children want to learn and feel safe and are comfortable with the environment around them.
