A few of my favorite books-
Stella by Starlight-Sharon Draper is an amazing writer. I was first intrigued by her book Out of My Mind for it's amazing and thought provoking point of view. However, Stella by Starlight is a novel that is actually quite different from Out of My Mind. It is a compelling story based in the time period in the 1930's when the Ku Klux Klan had been prominent in North Carolina. Stella is a young girl from Bumblebee and she struggles with the danger and negativity of racism. This novel is wonderful for 4th to 5th graders because Stella is at that age where she is learning to figure out who she is as a person. Not only does she need to deal with racism and the danger that comes with that but also, the struggles of growing up and trying to find out who she is and who she wants to become. The characters in the book are long lasting and the events are events that will have you thinking hours after you are done. We are in the period of time where minorities strive in America but we still have prejudices and stereotypes that children hear everyday. The acknowledgement and plot line from this book about racism will help students understand how to deal with it and how the struggle of the racism battle was important to the growth of our country. Children need to learn about racism and prejudices and this book is wonderful at weaving in the history, the dealing of racism, and the struggles of growing up. Out of My Mind- Out of My Mind is written by Sharon Draper and this story is an written in the perspective of a girl with Cerebral Palsy. She cannot speak a word but in this book you can follow her on her journey through school and see what a smart girl she is and all the things she wants to say but can't say out loud. Students will understand points of view from students who are different, it will open their minds and the novel will have students thinking about how they treat others. Counting by 7s- This novel is about a girl who is absolutely brilliant. She is fantastic with science and math, but an unfortunate tragic event occurs that effects her whole life. Follow her on her journeys and adventures where you as the reader can understand more about science and learn about emotion and friendships. When Lightning Comes in a Jar-Patricia Polacco is an amazing writer she puts vivid images into the readers mind by using figurative language, dialogue and descriptive language. This is a personal narrative or memoir where she speaks about her time with her grandmother. Learn about her traditions and find out how she and her family capture lightning in glass jars. Thank you Mr. Falker- This is another Patricia Polacco book where she talks about her struggles as a reader and writer in school. Follow along and connect with her. You will see that any student can grow and achieve great things just like Ms. Polacco did with a little help from a teacher and some hard work from the student. The True Story of The 3 Little Pigs- This book is also a great book to compare with the classic 3 Little Pigs story. It is also a really great book to look at point of view because this book is from the point of view of the Wolf not the 3 Little Pigs. |
